Iregular

New Media Art

ENQUIRE

Born in Bogotá, Colombia, Daniel Iregui grew up in a maths-savvy family, however, visual matters always lured him in. Since his family moved to Canada, Iregui has been developing his creative practice by mixing images, videos and sound. Throughout the years, he taught himself digital processes—mainly through developing games— but soon used these tools, systems and combinations to move beyond the limitations of products.

Now based in Montreal, Iregui is continually exploring the potentialities of interaction as applied to art making. Since 2013, he has focused on developing interactive visual, acoustic and bodily experiences. Driven by his own energy and stamina, Iregui’s work creates high-intensity situations in a multiplicity of media. Continuously evolving with technologies, Iregui’s practice is concept-led and technology-based. His creative technique is anchored in taking simple concepts, such as geometric forms and shapes, and exploring all their possibilities to their utmost limits.

In order to develop large-scale pieces, Iregui and his studio Iregular started developing their own technologies and programs. The studio, described by Iregui as a “continuous process of experimentation” constantly challenges the boundaries of interactive experiences. Inspired by architecture, life, the sky, or nature, they capture an organic essence and translate it into a piece that plays with light, air, density, geometry, scale, movement, and time. Iregular’s interactive projects are centred on human presence and agency—the body activates or deactivates, depending on the situation or narrative of the physical sculptures.

An oddity in passersby’s usual landscapes; Iregular’s digital sculptures and installations carry a distinctive linear or angular aesthetic, most often black and white, on the verge of a glitchy visuality. All of the installations are layered projects that transform the viewer into a participant and the participant into a reflecting person. Iregui’s work, through his studio, is an invitation to pause and experience something different. It aims at triggering curiosity, surprise, and emotions.  In a unique conversation between the digital and human experience, their installations are unforgettable works of art.
