Représentée par MTArt Agency, Liz West explore tout ce que les couleurs peuvent lui offrir, à travers des nuances de bleu, vert, jaune, rouge, orange et violet. Ayant grandi dans le South Yorkshire des années 1980, West affirme avoir « appris la couleur avant même de savoir lire ». Son parcours artistique a débuté sur son propre petit bureau, dans l’atelier de peinture de sa mère. Elle a ensuite décidé de poursuivre des études en beaux-arts à la Leeds Arts University, avant d’être diplômée de la Glasgow School of Art en 2007. C’est en Écosse qu’elle a commencé à explorer les possibilités des installations in situ.
Hypersensible à son environnement, West a développé un processus de création guidé par ses sens et son interaction tactile avec le monde. Elle a également commencé à collectionner des objets uniquement pour leurs couleurs. Inspirée par la culture pop des années 1990, son travail adopte une palette vibrante et des échelles monumentales, empruntées aux médias de masse et au divertissement populaire. Aujourd’hui, sa relation avec l’environnement passe par des approches visuelles, auditives et kinesthésiques-tactiles.
Désormais basée à Manchester, son attirance instinctive pour certaines couleurs s’est transformée en une approche méthodique. Toujours travaillant avec des couleurs déjà existantes, West les assemble avec précision pour créer ses œuvres prismatiques. Portée par une imagination vive et éclatante, ses compositions se structurent néanmoins dans des formes géométriques maîtrisées.
Ses dessins architecturaux sont la première traduction de ses idées, avant qu’elles ne prennent vie à travers des collaborations avec ingénieurs, architectes et fabricants, qui l’aident à trouver les meilleurs matériaux et structures. À l’aide de miroirs, acrylique, polycarbonate ou prismes, elle sublime ses formes colorées, jouant avec un spectre de lumières naturelles et artificielles. Ses œuvres sont spécifiques à leur site, réactives à l’espace et conditionnées par leur environnement, mais elles ont toujours pour objectif d’activer nos perceptions et sensations.
L’artiste a collaboré avec de nombreuses institutions et expositions majeures au cours de sa carrière, notamment Tate Britain, le National Media Museum, le Natural History Museum, ainsi que le festival Lumiere London. Elle a également réalisé des sculptures monumentales d’art public, comme Hundreds and Thousands pour Greenwich Peninsula, où 700 mètres de balustrades en verre ont été transformés en un ruban ondulant de couleurs.
Guidée par l’idée que nous avons besoin de couleurs dynamiques dans nos villes grises, West crée des environnements que l’on peut observer, expérimenter et traverser. Son travail est une offrande publique, célébrant les éléments les plus simples et les plus beaux de la vie. Grâce à la lumière et à la couleur, elle transforme le quotidien urbain en moments de plaisir et d’émerveillement.
