Claire Luxton, Plant Yourself, 2021 – present, The Crown Estate and MTArt Agency, London, UK.
With our partner The Crown Estate and our artist Claire Luxton, we launched our longest current public art project, entitled “Plant Yourself”. After our artist’s public art projects in Central London that started in January 2021, our artist Claire Luxton is continuing to inspire Londoners with her art. For this special project, Londoners are invited to look at their feet level as they wander on Regent Street to spot the beautiful and colourful artworks of our artist on brand new planters. The Crown Estate and Westminster City Council helped Regent Street to create a greener, safer and more accessible West End and we are proud to be stepping in and highlighting it with these super cool photographs. Our partners have worked closely with experts to carefully consider the types of plants and trees they are introducing, to ensure that they continue to improve biodiversity and enhance the experience for Londoners. It’s so important to us to have a positive impact on the development of one of London’s busiest areas and in continuing to improve the future of our high streets with our partners and our artists. To spot our planters with the photographs of our artist, passers-by can start their trail at Oxford Circus and head down towards Regent Street.
“It was such a unique and special opportunity to be able to work with The Crown Estate, on this reimagining of Regent St. My new public art project “Plant Yourself”, which weaves down a 1.3k stretch of the iconic street, was inspired by the hope of new life and a greener future. I fell in love with the idea that nature had reclaimed both us and the city. I pictured people sitting down, literally ’Planting themselves’, and daydreaming on Regent Street, as the plants started to grow with them, out of their sock and shoes. I wanted the project to be playful and engaging as the public is welcomed back to the reimagined space. Now as you explore Regent Street you see the pathways populated with botanicals, art, trees and seats! A new ecosystem has emerged in the cityscape.”
