Sam Lock
Paintings
Sam Lock, a contemporary British painter, explores the rhythms and currents of painting, creating a journey between and through the layers in his work. Known for his visceral brushstrokes, Lock also uses blowtorches and electric sanders on his oil paintings, wearing the surfaces down in a repeated process of building and destruction.
At their core, Lock’s work conveys the passage of time; colours, movement and places that are half-recalled or uncertain. Sam sees his paintings as each having a character, which he explores in the relationships between layers of media, the creation of tensions and interactions that evidence the intuitive processes he followed in their creation.
Lock’s paintings are found in collections across the UK, as well as abroad, with the artist exhibiting in institutions such as the Royal Academy of Arts. In addition he has produced paintings for the Marine Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore and the newly developed Penthouse suite at Battersea Power Station.
