– Anche quando l’alba non c’era –
MUSMA – Museo di scultura contemporanea Matera
Anche quando l’alba non c’era is by far my favourite personal exhibition. Created at the beginning of 2019 in the amazing museum of sculpture MUSMA, in Matera, is a journey from birth to death, through universal topics and emotions. Matera is known as the cities of the stones, and that influenced me deeply. All the figures are connected to the concrete structures around them, playing the roles of a dress, of a cage, of a heavy blanket, of a uterus.
La Madonna dell’umido is one of the few artworks in which i abandoned painting, i sculpted a slender figure of a virgin and created the condensation inside the box with the reaction of water to the heat of a stove, hidden inside the column underneath the artwork. The never ending falling drops of water inside the box resemble the miracles of crying statues.
Sotto la mia pelle shows the deception of appearences, the viewer approaches the beautiful girl portrayed on the front, to discover in the mirror the reflection of her mauled back, painted on the back side of the plexiglas.
La pietra scartata is possibly my own favourite piece ever, the floating arms painted on plexiglas balance the heaviness of the concrete column, and remind the viewer that every material thing is destined to disappear, like the body that has already been subtracted, hollowed away from the column, while the actions will create the memories of us.
I’m very happy this artwork is now part of the permanent collection of the museum.
There would be so much more to say, but i don’t wanna write a book, hopefully we’ll get the chance to speak more accurately about it.
